Restoration

Aging church buildings need regular attention if they are to be preserved and maintained. Work was completed some years ago to put on a new roof and redecorate the interior of our church and to repoint the east wall to fill holes in which we believed damp was penetrating, as had been evidenced by the state of the interior wall above the west end windows. This pointing was designed to allow the lime based mortar, to 'breath' - releasing the damp being held there. You can look around the east wall by placing your cursor in the picture below, holding down the left mouse button while dragging in any direction.

WHAT WAS DONE

The most recent restoration which took place back in 2004 received a Heritage Lottery Fund grant. It required replacing stone work around windows and cleaning the stained glass, with repairs to the leading. North , south and east walls of the church had the pointing replaced using a lime based cement. The use of this traditional mortar allowed the walls to expel water more easily, preventing damp penetrating to the interior plaster.
